A Mother’s Day Inteview: Ms. Loucille

IMG_1831Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 12th! In celebrating all the wonderful mothers out there we sat down Ms. Loucille, who will be celebrating her 92nd birthday in June, is mother of 4 daughters, grandmother to 6 and great-grandmother of 5! Read on to hear what Ms. Loucille had to say about being a mom and some memories of her own mom…

What are you looking forward to the most this Mother’s Day?

The family, getting together. We usually get together for dinner on Mother’s Day.

Are you hoping for any gifts?

I don’t want a thing- I don’t want anything to dust and I don’t need anything to wear! Now something to eat might be ok…

Do you have a memorable story from a past Mother’s Day?

Just some good memories of people getting together. My family is so blessed that we all get along! I do remember on Mother’s Day when my kids were young, my daughter dropped an entire bowl of banana pudding before she got to the table! It was everywhere!

What are some favorite memories of your own mother?

My mom was very loving person, but when she spoke, she meant it! She’d put her hands on your shoulders and look you in the eye and that would be it! I had 3 bothers and a sister, I can never remember any body getting spanked. She was an excellent cook too- chicken and dumplings, pies, cakes. She also made all of our clothes. I don’t know how she did everything she did.

How is being a grandmother different from motherhood?

In my case, my grandchildren are very close to me. I got to spend a lot of individual time with them when they were growing up. My great grandchildren don’t live very close to me though, so we use FaceTime to chat. I like getting to see them even though we don’t live close by.

What are some of the differences you’ve noticed about raising a family today versus how you were raised and how you raised your kids?

The way I was raised we improvised our toys, we played outside. We didn’t have anything extra. All the kids in the neighborhood played together. Kids today don’t socialize the way we did. They use their phones a lot.

What advice would you give to a new mom?

My mom and my mother in law would come and stay with me sometimes after each of my children were born. Young mothers today have to work and don’t get to spend as much time with them. That’s your bonding time. So, I would say to spend as much time with the baby as you can because it goes so fast.

What do you think is the greatest challenge of motherhood?

Motherhood really means accepting different phases of life; some people have a hard time, but I’ve been blessed.
