Gerontology Spotlight: Recognizing Impact of Nurse Practitioners

Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University (FranU) celebrates the dedication of healthcare professionals committed to enhancing the lives of aging populations. Gerontology nurse practitioners play a crucial role in providing compassionate, specialized care and ensure older adults receive the attention and treatment they deserve.

Recently, U.S. News & World Report featured Justin Cole, an adult gerontology nurse practitioner at St. Dominic’s Medical Associates in Jackson, Mississippi—a part of the same healthcare system as FranU. Justin’s journey into geriatric care was deeply personal, shaped by his close relationships with his grandparents and a passion for serving older adults.

“When I decided to pursue a career as a healthcare provider, I knew that I would be best suited to obtain an adult-geriatric degree. Throughout my nursing career, I have had a passion for treating the geriatric population,” Justin shared. “I later found a deep interest in treating neurological conditions, which suffers from a lack of available providers in my area.”

Justin’s dedication reflects the heart of gerontology—compassionate, patient-centered care that improves quality of life. He believes education is key to empowering his patients: “I believe that it is my duty as an advanced practice provider to educate myself and my patients to the best of my ability so that they can live longer, happier lives.”

At FranU, we are proud to be a part of a healthcare system that fosters skilled, compassionate caregivers like Justin. His commitment to providing quality healthcare aligns with our mission of advancing knowledge and improving patient outcomes.
